Raw Islam 58: Eid Mubarak...Where Do We Start? This week on the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar– a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast, we talk about families crossing the border and Islam’s perspective of our current actions.

Ramadan is over, and it was a much needed time to rest and recharge our brains and our souls. But the time of rest ended quickly as the world called our attention back with so much news – but we still need to try and stay focused and remember to not get run down as we are no good to anyone when we are running on zero battery.

With the news that has been leaked about families being tore apart at the border, Imam Azhar wants to address the issue – not from a political standpoint, but from a religious one. What does Islam say about separating families?

The truth is – no matter how much someone tweets about it – everyone that enters this country is allowed to have due process, that is the law. To build on that, we have the three branches of government to make sure that one branch does not become so powerful that it can change the fabric of the United States. In the Constitution it says that everyone on our soil is due due process, this went to the Supreme Court and was challenged, and upheld.

Islam teaches us that loyalty is not expressed through being a “yes man,” and for those that are standing around and not speaking out on injustices that are happening around us, they are just a guilty as those doing the crimes.

Raw Islam 57: Getting into That Ramadan SpiritThis week on the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar– a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast, we talk about getting into that Ramadan spirit!

There are more protests happening around the country, there are battles raging on in Palestine, there are volcanos erupting in Hawaii, and the personal struggles press on through Ramadan – So why are Muslims feeling that it is business as usual? Why are we missing that Ramadan spirits this year?

B.C. Dodge says that he has heard this a lot. People are not putting in the effort, by their emission of guilt, and thus are not getting out what they wanted. But what is causing this? And how can we fix it?

Imam Azhar says that we need to take time, we need to step away from our distractions and focus on getting closer to God. Something as simple as holding the Quran – if you can find time to read it – simply hold it and pray. But doing nothing but complaining about how disconnected you feel will not fix the issue.

Raw Islam 56: Close Your Applications and RechargeThis week on the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar– a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast, we talk about closing your applications and recharging.

Following the power outage that B.C. Dodge had during the last recording of this program, Imam Azhar continues his analogy of being a cell phone and having to recharge during Ramadan.

When you have all kinds of applications open on your phone, it slows your phone down and it drains the battery more quickly. Such is the way we live our lives. We have so many things going all the time that we tend to drain our battery and not think about how do we recharge ourselves. Thus Ramadan should be a time when we recharge ourselves, where we close our applications and plug in with our Lord.

But how do we go about “closing our applications?” Isn’t this podcast recorded live on Facebook weekly? So they are using social media to share this message. What is meant by this, is to find that balance to make sure that you are giving the time that is due to God, and not giving it to the gods of the internet.

And with that Ramadan is simple and easy – right?

There are problems in Ramadan. From being hangry to lack of sleep to poor communication. Ramadan is not what it should be – but how do we fix it?

Raw Islam 55: The 2018 Ramadan Moon WarsThis week on the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar– a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast, we start the 2018 Moon Wars!

Before we get too far into this episode, it needs to be noted that at B.C.’s house there were some very bad thunderstorms; and since he is the “tech guy” for this show – when his power goes out the show goes out. So sadly, this is not a full episode. However, we did continue the train of thought started here on the next episode!

This episode starts with the eternal question of – when does Ramadan start?
Do we look at the calendar where is has been calculated, or do we wait for the moon to be spotted? But what if it totally overcast and nothing can be seen?

But is this really the best way for us to be spending our time? Given the situation in Palestine/Israel – is it best to spend our energy arguing over a moon sighting?

All of this leads to another question which Imam Azhar asks, is it just us or does it seem like every Ramadan something happens to distract us for our worshp?

Raw Islam 54: Keys to A Successful Ramadan

Raw Islam 54: Keys to A Successful RamadanThis week on the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar– a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast, address the Keys to A Successful Ramadan.

To illustrate his point about being ready for Ramadan emotionally and mentally, Imam Azhar asks B.C. Dodge what happens when to much water is added to pancake batter. To which B.C. suggest that some horrible things should happen to the person who did such an action.

As the Imam starts to share his thoughts on how to have a successful Ramadan, B.C. suggests that due to the fact that Ramadan is only 30 days most Muslims try to cram as many iftars and events that they can into these 30 days. Which can sometimes become draining on people that attend, but yet every year they try to do more and more with the same amount of time.

B.C. suggests that it is inappropriate to be welcoming and treat someone nice at the mosque or event, simply because it is Ramadan, he says “If you treat me this way, and are nice to me, only because it is Ramadan; when Ramadan is over I will not be returning, nor will my checkbook.” Imam Azhar say that B.C. is absolutely correct.

Raw Islam 53: Three Ways of Pronouncing Ramadan

Raw Islam 53: Three Ways of Pronouncing RamadanThis week on the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar– a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast, we talk about the three ways of pronouncing Ramadan – and the three types of Muslims that observe Ramadan.

The Imam opens this podcast by giving his salaams to creatures out in space which he knows is a trigger for B.C. Dodge. This is because in the Quran, verse 1 line 2, it reads “[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” And B.C. is a big supporter of the idea that it is mathematically impossible for humans to be the only intelligent life form in the vast multitude of planets and universes…but we are here to talk about the start of Ramadan.

The question that Imam Azhar asks is how do you say Ramadan?
Is it Ramadan?
Or Ramazan?
Or is it some other form?

They then move on to counters. The Imam asks how counters, or countdowns, make you feel. When you see a counter that is is counting down, to say the first night of Ramadan, how does that make you feel? B.C. says that it makes him feel stressed.

All of this brings us to the question of which type of Muslims are you, when Ramadan starts?
Are you the robot Muslim? Where you are doing everything without question and on precision?

Are you the Party Muslim? Where Ramadan is all about going out with friends and family for iftars or suhoor?

Or are you the Muslim that simply does your best to stay on top of reading the Quran and works your hardest at trying to hit all the prayers?
