This week on the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar– a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast, we talk about the three ways of pronouncing Ramadan – and the three types of Muslims that observe Ramadan.
The Imam opens this podcast by giving his salaams to creatures out in space which he knows is a trigger for B.C. Dodge. This is because in the Quran, verse 1 line 2, it reads “[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” And B.C. is a big supporter of the idea that it is mathematically impossible for humans to be the only intelligent life form in the vast multitude of planets and universes…but we are here to talk about the start of Ramadan.
The question that Imam Azhar asks is how do you say Ramadan?
Is it Ramadan?
Or Ramazan?
Or is it some other form?
They then move on to counters. The Imam asks how counters, or countdowns, make you feel. When you see a counter that is is counting down, to say the first night of Ramadan, how does that make you feel? B.C. says that it makes him feel stressed.
All of this brings us to the question of which type of Muslims are you, when Ramadan starts?
Are you the robot Muslim? Where you are doing everything without question and on precision?
Are you the Party Muslim? Where Ramadan is all about going out with friends and family for iftars or suhoor?
Or are you the Muslim that simply does your best to stay on top of reading the Quran and works your hardest at trying to hit all the prayers?
