This week on the Raw Islam Podcast Imam Azhar and B.C. Dodge open this episode by talking about the Butterfly effect. If you have never heard about this, it the phenomenon whereby a minute localized change in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere. The example that B.C. gives us is that of a tornado – given the exact time of formation, exact path taken – being influenced by minor perturbations such as the flapping of the wings of a distant butterfly several weeks earlier.
This leads Imam Azhar to recall a post he had made on his Facebook page earlier that day asking What is wrong with Islam. There were many answers given like “Islam isn’t compatible with the West,” “We have lost our leaders,” “Muslims have lost their beliefs,” “Islam is a culture, not a religion;” and to each of these he would reply the same way… “Why?”
The point that he was trying to make is that Islam is progressing, people are converting daily, and the message is reaching further and further…however…Muslims, not so much. In the end, putting is plain and simple – the problem isn’t Islam it is Muslims.
What does it mean to be a Muslim?
At some point, we as a people, have stopped looking inward and started looking at others and deciding it was more important to point out what was wrong with everyone else rather than looking inwards and fixing our own issues. As an example of this a father scolds his children and tells them to go pray, but he himself does not pray. What kind of person does this make him?
This echo of Matthew 7:5 from the Bible “Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”
Imam Azhar then asks If you are stuck in a cave have you reached your destination?
The answer, of course, is no, you have not. Then why do Muslims who are stuck in this preverbal cave think that their journey to the top is over?
