This week on the Raw Islam Podcast with Imam Azhar – a 2017 Podcast Award nominated podcast, we address the opioid epidemic that is griping the nation.
There is so much going on in the nation at this point – from our president starting a controversy over the NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem, to the Hurricane Maria that destroyed Puerto Rico, to other issues around the first amendment – but the semi-silent killer under all of that is the current opioid epidemic.
When the Imam starts to talk about the NFL, B.C. Dodge jumps on the mic to explain that this Colin Kaepernick is really a non-issue. People are saying that they are disrespecting the nation by kneeling during the National Anthem – which in fact isn’t what is happening and the point of what they are doing seems to be lost on some people. The fact is that they are kneeling to protest racial injustice, this has nothing to do with the National Anthem, nor does it have anything to do with dishonoring the U.S. Military… the truth is that it the idea of kneeling at the start of the games came from a U.S. Navy Seal Veteran that was on the team with Kaepernick. Kaepernick kneels to honor those lost to violence, specifically African-Americans that are unarmed and being killed by law enforcement.
But thanks to our president tweeting about the NFL the conversation was shifted from what it should be… the current opioid epidemic. According to CDC, in 2015 about 90 people a day died from overdoses from opioid byproducts such as heroin or fentanyl; and half of those death were from prescriptions that had been given by a doctor.
It is simple to think that this happens to someone else, or this doesn’t happen in our communities, but the truth is with 90 people dying a day it will affect every community – even Muslim communities. We need to accept this and start to deal with it, rather than pretending that it doesn’t happen in our community.
